CHAPTER TWELVE

Anna pressed a hand against her chest, but the rapid thump of her heart wasn’t a side effect from her mad dash across the lawn.

When she and Liam had collided, he’d shifted his weight a split second before they hit the ground and used his body to cushion her fall. Anna could still feel the imprint of Liam’s warm hands on her sides. Heard the ragged hitch of his breath in her ear...

Now she was the one having trouble breathing.

Had Liam moved closer so he could make sure she wasn’t hurt...or had he been about to kiss her?

Suddenly aware they had an audience, Anna took a wobbly step toward the picnic table.

And then another.

Liam rose to his feet but kept a careful distance this time. “Anna—”

“Just give me a minute,” she wheezed. “I have to...win.”

Liam’s expression changed from wary to disbelieving as Anna sprinted toward the picnic table. A cheer went up from the captives as she ran a circle around it, slapping each one of the captives’ outstretched hands to make it official.

“I can’t believe you did that!” Lily sang out from the midst of the captives Anna had set free.

“I’ll bet Liam is thinking the same thing.” The darkness didn’t hide Aiden’s grin.

But at least it hid Anna’s blush.

“That was so much fun, Mom!” Cassie attached herself to Anna’s side. “Can we play again?” A yawn punctuated the question. “Please?”

Anna didn’t have to look at her watch to know it was way past the girls’ bedtime. “It’s getting late, Cass. Time to go home.” She turned to Sunni before they could protest. “Thank you for inviting us to stay for dinner.”

“Don’t thank me.” Sunni flashed a smile at Cassie and Chloe. “When you and the girls are here, Lily and I don’t feel so outnumbered.”

“Can we say good-night to the kittens, Mom?” Chloe pleaded.

Anna hesitated. Now that the adrenaline was wearing off, fatigue rolled in like fog and clouded her thinking. What other reason could there be for letting Liam get that close to her?

“Please?” Cassie joined the chorus. “Just for a minute?”

“Just for a minute,” Anna agreed. “And when we get home it’s a shower and straight to bed.”

“Okay!” Cassie and Chloe darted toward Liam’s workshop in case Anna changed her mind.

“Speaking of four-legged friends, I think I’ll drive over to the shelter and check on one of our new arrivals,” Sunni said. “He wasn’t talking to me after the vet gave him a rabies shot this morning.”

“I can do it.” Aiden offered. “Liam can ride along and keep me company. We’ll review the tape from tonight’s loss, and I’ll help him form a new strategy.”

Liam shook his head. “I thought Brendan was the bossy one.”

“I’ve been taking lessons.” Aiden grinned at Anna. “After you, my lady.”

Anna was grateful for Aiden’s presence as they walked down the driveway. He cracked jokes with Liam and teased Anna constantly but she didn’t take him seriously. Over the last few years she’d watched the youngest Kane brother charm every
